Valiants Overcome Dolphins In Matchup Between Skyline's Top Teams

Riverdale, NY - The University of Mount Saint Vincent hosted the Skyline Conference's biggest regular season game to date, one that saw the top-seeded Dolphins take on second place Manhattanville College. The matchup lived up to the billing, as both teams traded leads for the duration of the contest; but it was the Valiants who would emerge victorious, as they walked away with a 59-55 win after knocking down a pair of free throws with less than two seconds remaining on the clock.

The loss still leaves the Dolphins in a strong position. Their 8-2 conference record is good for third place while sitting at 12-3 overall at the midway point.

It wasn't the best offensive showing for UMSV, but their defense and physicality kept them in the game all evening long. Despite the struggles - the Dolphins shot just 30% from the floor - three different players reached double figures. Senior guard Amber Been looked fully healthy from her early season knee injury as she paced the Dolphins with 15 points while shooting an even 50% from the floor. The Bronx native also added seven boards and a pair of assists, and was a force in the passing lanes as she accumulated four steals.

Magan Jackson and Kira Villegas combined for 23 points, scoring 13 and 10, respectively.

The second quarter saw UMSV go on their best run, as the home team saw their lead balloon to six points. Been and Villegas combined for four points before Melanieann Broderick would grab an offensive rebound and a put-back layup with less than two minutes left in the half.

The Dolphins made a major comeback in the fourth, with UMSV coming back from nine points down to tie things up with 2:04 left on the clock. Shamoni Berrios entered the game at that point and was a force in the middle, scoring four points throughout that span while excelling in the passing game. Been, Ariella Johnson and JaKaia Lotz each registered points to tie things up at 53 before Manhattanville was able to knock down their free throws to ice the game.

The tough string of games continue for UMSV when Mount Saint Mary makes their way to Riverdale on Saturday.
