Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's soccer team was looking to pick up their first conference win of the year on Thursday, and they did just that, as they went on to defeat Old Westbury by the score of 1-0 in a rainy showdown on Marillac. The victory moves CMSV to 1-1-1 against the Skyline and 3-2-1 overall through six games.
It was a tale of two halves for the Dolphins, with
Johnny Raj's squad playing an aggressive brand of soccer in the first half while focusing on defense in the second. The team took nine first half shots compared to just four by the Panthers over the first 45 minutes of action, with senior
Ian Lamas' conversion on a penalty kick attempt being the lone goal of the contest. The Mamaroneck, New York native now has five goals this season, a team-high as well as tied for fourth in the Skyline.
The contest shifted in the second half, as Old Westbury was on the attack for the majority of it. But CMSV's defense had another impressive outing, led by transfer Andrew Tarkazikas in net. The junior pitched a shutout in his first start for CMSV, while defenders
Donovan Speer,
Justin Betancourt,
Cesar Mendez and
Trevor Pegg each did a strong job halting the Panthers attack.
The game turned physical, with both teams combining for 41 foul calls, but the Dolphins fended off the pressure to emerge victorious.
The Dolphins will look to continue their winning ways this coming weekend. Skyline play rolls on, as CMSV heads out of town to take on St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on Sunday.
