Purchase, NY - After going 1-0-1 to kick off Skyline Conference play, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's soccer team set their sights on Manhattanville College, who they took on in Purchase on Tuesday evening. A defensive battle was the name of the game for nearly 90 minutes of action, but it was freshman
Eva Puentes who catapulted her team to victory with a goal in the 89th minute. The win gave the Dolphins their fourth on the year, improving their overall record to 4-3-1 through eight games.
The Dolphins defense continued their standout collective performance against conference opponents throughout the course of the game. The unit, led by sophomore
Arianna Morales and freshmen
Gisselle Soria and
Cameron Cruz, stifled the Valiants strikers, limiting the team to just seven total shots, including only one in the second half of action. Sophomore All-Conference goalkeeper
Brooke Frierson had another impressive night in net, with the Harker Heights, Texas native turning away all three shots she faced, lowering her goals against average to just 1.73 in six starts.
The offense, meanwhile, were relentless in their attack in the second half. The Dolphins took 17 total shots in the second, compared to just three in the first. Their aggressive play paid off in a major way when Puentes, the first year player from Garwood, New Jersey, scored her second goal in as many games at the 88:59 mark to put her team up for the first time all evening, and for good. Sophomore
Victoria Gamarra picked up her second assist on the strike.
For the Dolphins, the win pushes them to second overall in the Skyline in the early goings of conference play. The team will look to continue their success on the road when they take on Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh on Saturday.
