Dolphins Continue Winning Ways Against Knights

Newburgh, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent baseball team made their second consecutive trip to Newburgh on Monday, finally taking on Mount Saint Mary College after weather postponed the original meeting on Sunday. The Dolphins, who were led by assistant coach Isidoros Bartziokas, took two games from the Knights, game one by a score of 10-0 and game two by a score of 17-6. The Dolphins improved their conference record to 5-0 and their overall record to 12-8 halfway through the season.

Andrew Geiger took the hill for the Dolphins in game one, looking to not only lead his team to a win, but to also continue his stellar 2023 campaign. Geiger tossed a complete game shutout, going seven innings only allowing three hits and striking out nine in the process. After the victory, Geiger's ERA was lowered to 0.36 through five games this season.

The Dolphins offense was just as dominant, scoring 10 runs, four of which were scored in the first inning. The first run scored on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Drew Knight that would plate a run. Following Knight was an RBI groundout by graduate student Eric Zimmermann to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead. Later on in the inning, Knight would come around to score on a passed ball, then an RBI single by senior infielder Engers Marte capped off the scoring for the Dolphins in the first. The Dolphins never looked back after the first inning, adding six more runs in the remainder of the game to cruise to a 10-0 victory in game one over the Knights.

The Dolphins gave junior pitcher/outfielder Sean Kennedy the nod in game two. Kennedy hurled 5.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) while striking out four along the way. Kennedy got run support early, as the Dolphins offense got off to a hot start yet again. This time the Dolphins scored five runs in the first inning to jump ahead of the Knights before they could come to bat.

Knight drove in the first run on a fielding error and would later come around to score on a single by Zimmermann. Jason Albert continued the scoring for the Dolphins with an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0. Engers Marte capped off the scoring for the Dolphins in the first with a two RBI single that scored Albert and Jake Pierre to extend their lead to 5-0.

The Knights attempted a comeback, as the game was brought within one run in the sixth inning at a score of 7-6. In the seventh inning, however, the Dolphins broke the game open, scoring four runs in the seventh inning, three runs in the eighth inning and another three runs in the ninth inning. A big part of the offensive explosion in the late innings for the Dolphins was a three-run homerun by Marte in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach for good.

Zimmermann and Pierre had perfect second games, going 6-for-6 and 4-for-4, respectively, as the driving forces behind the offense. Dom Porto scored five total runs while Marte drove in a day-high eight RBI.

The Dolphins are now on a break from conference play until April 15 against the Manhattanville College Valiants. Their next game will be on this Thursday against Lehman College at Roberto Clemente State Park.
