Bronx, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent baseball team headed to Roberto Clemente State Park on Thursday to face the Lehman College Lightning in a midweek non-conference matchup. The Dolphins bats erupted for 17 runs and won by a score of 17-8. The Dolphins improved their overall record to 13-8 halfway through the season.
The Dolphins fell down 2-0 early after giving up two runs before stepping up to the plate, but quickly answered with seven runs of their own. This would give them a five run edge lead heading into the second inning where they tacked on two more runs to extend their lead to 9-2.
Lehman attempted a comeback in the third inning, scoring four runs to bring the game within three. However, the Dolphins never looked back after this, outscoring the Lightning by a score of 8-2. Freshman outfielder Danny DiNorcia was a big part of the Dolphins offensive success today, reaching base six times, tallying two walks and four hits. Two of DiNorcia's hits were for extra bases, including a towering two run home run to bring his season total in home runs up to five. Another reason for the Dolphins offensive success was senior infielder Engers Marte, who tallied two hits in five at bats, both of his hits being doubles. On top of the two doubles, Marte also tallied one run and one RBI of his own. Senior infielder Jake Pierre was also a big component to the Dolphins offense clicking today, tallying two home runs, bringing his season total to six which is tied for the Skyline Conference lead in home runs.
Freshman pitcher/outfielder Will Granata was key in shutting down the Lightning offense in the latter portion of the game. Granata pitched 3.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out four in the process.
The Dolphins are back in action on April 13 against Lehman College yet again, with this time serving as a road matchup. The Dolphins will look to sweep Lehman in their two games against each other this season and look to use the game as a tune up for a big conference weekend against Manhattanville College and SUNY Old Westbury where they look to improve their conference record and move closer to a playoff spot.
