Purchase, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team called Purchase College their home once again, this time taking on Yeshiva University in a Skyline Conference double header. The winning ways of the Dolphins continued on Friday morning, cruising to two mercy rule victories, with game one ending 13-1, while game two was a 12 run shutout. Now 9-3 against the Skyline, CMSV currently sits in third place in the conference standings.
The Dolphins got things going early offensively.
Kevin Carbon's squad scored four first innings runs and never looked back, thanks to
Nichole Reyes,
Jocelyn Vega and
Liana Cabeza, who all drove in runs. Sophomore outfielder
Sierra Romero singled to left to make it a five run game to open the second inning, with Reyes,
Viviana Meneses and
Madyson Epps all recording RBI, firmly putting the game out of reach for Yeshiva.
All nine Dolphins starters reached base, while Reyes, Meneses and fellow freshman
Sabrina Colon led the way with two hits each.
Carbon utilized three pitchers across five innings, with the freshmen trio of
Serena Duran,
Mila Gutierrez and
Savannah Autobee each taking turns on the bump. The trio combined to allow just six total baserunners, with Gutierrez leading the charge with five strikeouts.
The theme of game one rolled into game two, with the offense putting the game out of reach before the third inning. The Dolphins went up by two runs thanks to a wild pitch and a Vega sacrifice fly, while Vega, Caitlin Cirillo,
Celine Vaughn,
Charlotte Kelly,
Emma Capozucca and
Yasly Mendoza each added RBI to their stat lines in the second. Cirillo, Vaughn, Capozucca and Kelly paced the Dolphins with two hits apiece. Vega's three RBI in game two was a team-high as well.
Vega took the mound for the first time since her perfect game against Sarah Lawrence College and continued her terrific senior campaign. The Elizabeth, New Jersey native struck out six in just two innings, while Kelly and
Katie Hutter helped shut the door in the final three innings of action.
The Dolphins' Sunday double header against St. Joseph's University Long Island has been postponed due to inclement weather. The games will be made up this coming Wednesday, with the Dolphins looking to further climb the conference standings.
