Poughkeepsie, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent baseball team traveled to Poughkeepsie, New York to face off against the Vassar College Brewers in a midweek matchup. The Dolphins fought back and forth with the Brewers, but ultimately came out on top by a score of 8-6. The Dolphins improved their overall record to 18-12 with the victory.
The Dolphins gave freshman pitcher Mike Iocco the nod for today's midweek contest, making the second start of his collegiate career and of this season. Iocco turned in a very solid start, pitching five innings while allowing only two runs on four hits and striking out three in the process as he continues to solidify himself as a reliable arm for CMSV.
The Dolphins fell into a 2-0 hole early on in the second inning, and scoring halted until the top half of the fifth inning. It was at that point when the Dolphins broke their scoring drought, courtesy of an RBI bunt single by freshman shortstop Johnny Brucato. The Dolphins picked up the scoring again with an eighth inning outburst, scoring five runs and taking the lead 6-2 at the time.
The first run scored courtesy of Tyler Margolis' first collegiate hit with an RBI double, followed by another RBI bunt single from Brucato. The Dolphins were not done yet, as they scored their next three runs thanks to an RBI walk from Danny DiNorcia, a fielder's choice off the bat of Eric Zimmermann, and a throwing error to cap off the scoring for the Dolphins in the eighth. The Brewers mounted a comeback with an offensive outburst of their own in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs and knotting the game at six a piece heading into the ninth inning.
The Dolphins continued their offensive prowess in the ninth inning, scoring two runs and taking an 8-6 lead. Will Granata got the scoring started in the ninth inning for the Dolphins with an RBI double that would give them the lead 7-6 and later on in the inning Johnny Brucato continued his stellar game at the plate with an RBI single and extended the Dolphins lead to 8-6. Senior pitcher Justin Dutzer came in for the save in the ninth and completed his task successfully, shutting down the Brewers and earning his first save of the season.
The Dolphins are back in action on Friday, taking on the USMMA Mariners on the road in Kings Point, New York looking to improve their conference record and move closer to a playoff berth.
