King's Point, NY - The Dolphins hit the road to Kings Point to face off against the USMMA Mariners a day earlier than expected due to inclement weather incoming this weekend. The Dolphins pulled away in game one by a score of 2-1 thanks to some timely hitting by the offense and a great pitching performance by their ace
Andrew Geiger. The Dolphins dropped game two by a score of 2-0 despite another stellar performance from the pitching staff.
The balanced matchup was a preview of a tightly contested Skyline Conference as playoff approach.
Geiger was out on the mound in game one, and he was back to his usual dominant ways after a rare blip on his statline against Maritime a week ago. The senior hurled seven innings of one run ball while walking none and striking out three batters as well. It was a pitcher's duel all game, as runs were scarce with the Mariners scoring their lone run in the second inning and the Dolphins scoring both of their runs in the fifth inning.
Freshman outfielder Danny DiNorcia continued his stellar rookie campaign with an RBI single to knot the game at one a piece. Veteran Eric Zimmermann came through for his team despite grounding out, as his knock would drive in the eventual game winning run. Freshman shortstop Johnny Brucato had a great game as well, continuing his recent offensive rampage with a three hit day and scoring the game's first run to help propel the Dolphins over the Mariners in game one.
The win improved the Dolphins conference record to 9-4 at the time and pushing them closer to a playoff spot.
The Dolphins gave the nod to junior pitcher/outfielder Sean Kennedy in the second contest and he did not disappoint. The two-way standout tossed a solid 5.2 innings of one run baseball, allowing only four hits while walking only one batter and striking out four. Relieving Kennedy's efforts on the mound was senior pitcher Aidan Rice, who tossed the remaining 2.1 innings, allowing one over that span.
Unfortunately the efforts of Kennedy and Rice were not enough, as they were out-dueled by the Mariners staff who shut down the Dolphins. The Dolphins attempted a rally in the ninth inning with a hit by Eric Zimmermann and a hit by pitch to Jake Pierre, but their two total hits were not enough to plate a run and the Dolphins would fall to the Mariners by a score of 2-0.
The Dolphins are back in action on Tuesday against the St Joseph's Brooklyn Bears at LIU-Post for some more Skyline Conference action.
