Throggs Neck, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent baseball team traveled to SUNY Maritime to face off against the Privateers in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday, looking to bounce back from two splits the previous weekend. The Dolphins dropped the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 5-1, but their offense exploded for 23 runs on their way to a 19-run win in game two.Â
Andrew Geiger got the nod as usual in game one. The senior ace tossed five innings, allowing five runs while striking out eight and walking one batter.
The Dolphins got off to a hot start in the first inning, courtesy of a home run off the bat of freshman infielder Drew Knight to jump out to an early lead. The Dolphins offense was silenced after this, however, only tallying another four hits and not scoring another run on their way to the loss in game one.
Game two is where the Dolphins turned it around, scoring 23 runs en route to the victory. The scoring started off early and often, with graduate student Eric Zimmermann getting the Dolphins on the board with a first inning solo shot to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead early. Later on in the first inning, freshman outfielder/pitcher Will Granata added to the scoring with a two RBI double to extend the Dolphins lead to 3-0 at the time. The following inning was much of the same for the Dolphins. This time it was a Knight RBI double to get it started, followed by a pair of two-run home runs, one off the bat of Granata and the other off the bat of senior infielder Jake Pierre. Granata and Zimmermann each added another home run, with Granata's being a three-run home run and Zimmermann's being a two-run home shot.
Tucked away in the offensive explosion by the Dolphins was a great outing by senior pitcher Aidan Rice. Rice tossed a complete game, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out 11 and only walking one batter on his way to earning the victory on the day. The Dolphins earned the victory by a score of 23-4, improving their overall record on the year to 17-12 and their conference record to 8-4.
The Dolphins are back in action Wednesday in Poughkeepsie, taking on Vassar College in a midweek non-conference matchup hoping to keep up their winning ways.Â
