Dolphins Split Saturday Series With Manhattanville

Purchase, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent baseball team headed to Purchase to take on the Manhattanville College Valiants in a Skyline Conference doubleheader. The Dolphins split the day, winning game one by a score of 2-1 and losing the second game by a score of 10-5 to improve their Skyline Conference record to 6-1 and their overall record to 15-9.

The Dolphins sent their ace Andrew Geiger to the hill, looking to pick up a game one victory over the Valiants. In what has become a theme all season long, Geiger pitched like an ace, tossing six innings of one run ball, while allowing six hits and striking out four. It was a pitchers duel in game one, so runs were hard to come by, but in the fourth inning the Dolphins would strike first courtesy of a passed ball that would score senior infielder Jake Pierre and give the Dolphins a 1-0.

The Valiants would answer back in the sixth inning with a single to score a run and knot the game at 1 a piece, but the Dolphins answered back immediately in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Jason Albert that scored Pierre yet again and gave the Dolphins a 2-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. Senior pitcher Aidan Rice came in with the tall task of getting two big outs for the Dolphins with runners on first and second in the seventh inning to close out the game. Rice did just that, striking out the first batter and getting the second hitter to ground out to shortstop to end the game and seal the victory for the Dolphins in game one.

In game two, the Dolphins sent out junior pitcher/outfielder Sean Kennedy as they looked to pick up their second straight win against the Valiants. Kennedy pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out two.

The Dolphins fell behind 5-1 late in the seventh inning, but rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Valiants lead to 5-4. Dom Porto, Jake Pierre and Eric Zimmermann all contributed RBI walks for the three runs scored in the bottom of the inning. Freshman outfielder Danny DiNorica would come up big for the Dolphins in the bottom of the eighth inning with a game-tying RBI single that knotted the game at 5, capping off his three hit day.

Neither team would score in the ninth, so the game would go to extras. In the top of the tenth, the Valiants put up five unanswered runs and would win the game by a score of 10-5.

The Dolphins are back in action for another Skyline Conference doubleheader tomorrow Sunday against SUNY Old Westbury at Clemente Park as they look to close out the weekend with another pair of wins.
