Dolphins Score 11 In Loss Against NJCU

Jersey City, NJ - The College of Mount Saint Vincent men's baseball team shipped off to Jersey City to face the NJCU Gothic Knights in a non-conference midweek matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Dolphins had their ups and downs this game, eventually falling short of a victory to NJCU by a score of 14-11.

Senior pitcher Aidan Rice got the start for the Dolphins, looking for a tune up ahead of a big conference weekend against Mount Saint Mary College. Rice tossed 3.1 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) while striking out four in the process. Despite the limited innings, it was a strong start for Rice, who will be playing a big role in CMSV's rotation as Skyline play comes in full force.

The Dolphins offense was clicking early in today's game, scoring two runs in the first inning to give them an early 2-0 lead, courtesy of a Drew Knight single and a wild pitch scoring Dom Porto. In the fifth inning, the Dolphins offense exploded for nine runs and jumped out to an 11-3 lead, with RBI hits by seven out of the nine hitters in the lineup. Freshman pitcher Jake Bland had a solid performance today for the Dolphins as well, pitching two strong innings, giving up one run while striking out three in the process.

The Dolphins held an 11-4 lead going into the seventh inning and it looked like they were destined to leave with a win. The Gothic Knights would then go on to score 10 unanswered runs, nine in the seventh inning and one in the eighth to take a 14-11 lead and would eventually win by that score, blanking the Dolphins offense the rest of the way after that electric fifth inning.

Porto and first-year standout Danny DiNorcia had three hits apiece, both team highs, while combining to score four runs. Knight drove in three total runs for the Dolphins, with graduate student Eric Zimmermann going 1-for-3 with a pair of hits and two walks.

The Dolphins are back in action on Thursday against Ramapo College and hope to get back into the win column and improve their record to 11-7  ahead of a big conference matchup against the Knights this weekend.
