West Hartford, CT - The College of Mount Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team opened up their 2023 season on Saturday against the University of Hartford Hawks. Meaghan Smith's squad fought hard, but ultimately ended up losing the weather shortened affair by a score of 14-3.
The Dolphins kept the game close for the entire first period as Ava Starace scored the first goal of the season off an assist by Alicia Rodriguez to tie the game at one. The period ended 2-1 in favor of the Hawks.
The second period is when the Hawks started to pull away with the lead. The Dolphins went down 10-1, but Ashley Teal scored a goal with hopes of starting a comeback for the Dolphins, but they trailed by a score of 11-2 at halftime. As the game started back up after the half, the Dolphins were looking for a spark out of the gate, and got that with a early goal scored by Starace to cut the deficit to 13-2. But with the harsh snowfall, it became impossible for the Dolphins and Hawks to play. The game was called after the third period due to these severe weather conditions.
Junior goalkeeper Katherine Hungerford made nine saves in the time of play. Rodriguez, Hungerford, Kaitlyn Cronin and Alyssa LaTorre paced the Dolphins with three ground balls apiece while Rodrigurx also led the way with three caused turnovers.
The Dolphins women's lacrosse team is back in action in Mahwah, New Jersey next Saturday against Ramapo College. They'll look to notch their first victory of the young season on the road.
