Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team took the Peter Jay Sharp Center floor for the second time this season - but this time around, the end result was very much in the team's favor. The Dolphins had one of the most impressive showings to date, dominating the visiting Pratt Institute in straight sets (25-17, 25-12, 25-13), en route to their first win of the 2023 campaign. It was an impressive contest for CMSV head coach Matt Johann, who utilized his entire roster throughout the victory.
The Dolphins opened the game on a 4-0 run, thanks kills from
James Rose and
Olatomiwa Ibitayo, took take the early advantage. CMSV would replicate their success on two other occasions in the first set, and also rattled off a pair of three point runs as well.
Kevin Erhand,
Terence Strehle and
Samuel Martinez would also convert kill attempts, as the Dolphins went on to take the first set from the Cannoneers.
The team's success followed them into the second set. After trading points in the early going, the Dolphins would extend their lead to 16-7 when
Timothy Magsino rattled off three aces in four serves. Strehle and Martinez would continue their impressive outing, with the fans in attendance giving the Dolphins an extra boost over the course of the action. The third set was a formality, with the Dolphins scoring eight straight points to open period of play. Over that span, the familar faces of Erhand, Strehle and Martinez would all pick up kills while Martinez and freshman
Tristen Hood combined for a block for the squad's seventh point. Before the night was over, first year players
Pat Ilardi,
Ronny Lopez Jr.,
Francis Verdeflor and
Sean Schools would all enter the points column.
The trio of Erhand, Strehle and Martinez combined for 15 total kills, with Strehle also pacing the Dolphins with 12 helpers and six service aces.
Matthew Baranacos came off the bench and served up seven assists of his own while libero
Felix Paulino recorded 10 digs.
It'll be a familar matchup in less than 24 hours. The Dolphins will be taking the road trip to Brooklyn tomorrow evening to face off against the Pratt Institute in the second leg of a home-and-home series.
