Dolphins Open 2023 Season With Double Header Against Drew

Teaneck, NJ - The Dolphins men's baseball team, led by John Muller, had their season opening double header today against the Drew University Rangers on Saturday afrernoon. The Dolphins are looking to build on their 2022 campaign where they finished as the three seed in the Skyline Conference and made it to the second leg of the Skyline Conference tournament.

The Dolphins started Andrew Geiger, the team's ace, in the firsr game - and the senior looked exactly like the ace he was a season ago. Geiger threw in four innings, giving up two runs (none earned) while striking out five. In the first inning, Johnny Brucato made a nice play in the hole to start off the Dolphins season, while Geiger only need 7 pitches and a strikeout to silence the Rangers' bats.

The second inning is where the scoring started. The Rangers plated two unearned runs in the top half of the inning, and the Dolphins answered back with an RBI double from graduate student Eric Zimmermann. The Dolphins defense was stellar from the third inning on. Freshman Conor Martin was substituted into the game in the fourth inning and made an immediate impact when he made a diving play to his right, saving a double and a run from scoring.

The Dolphins offense struggled to get anything going the rest of the game, only recording four hits. They did, however, generate eight walks and also had three players hit by pitches. The Dolphins scored three runs on two hits, two walks and two hit by pitches in the seventh to cut the lead to two runs, but ultimately fell short and lost the first contest to the Rangers.

In the second game, the Dolphins sent junior captain Sean Kennedy to the hill. Sean pitched 5.2 innings, giving up five runs while striking out five.

The Dolphins offense came out swinging in game two, scoring a run in the first to cut the deficit to 2-1. This would be all of the runs scored by the Dolphins in the second game, losing the contest 7-1. There were many bright spots in this game, specifically Will Granata, who started the first game of his collegiate career at first base and ran with that opportunity. Granata had two hits and a walk, one of the hits being a double. Zimmermann carried over his success from the first game, tallying a pair of hits to bring his hit total on the day to four.

The Dolphins are back in action next Sunday at Bard College and hope to snag their first two wins of this young season against the Raptors.
