Throggs Neck, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team entered Tuesday night winners in four of their last five Skyline Conference games and looked to keep their hot streak alive in a road contest against Maritime. The Dolphins looked like they were well on their way to furthering their success, but a second half surge from the Privateers resulted in a 70-66 loss for CMSV.
Despite the loss, the Dolphins – now 6-5 in conference play – are still in a prime position to make the playoffs for the second straight season.
The first 11 minutes of action saw both CMSV and Maritime play to a one possession game, including three different lead changes. The Dolphins then jumped out to their largest lead at the time when freshman
Jalen Lewis threw down yet another highlight reel dunk to give his team a 19-12 lead with 9:33 left in the first.
The Dolphins continued to keep their lead, thanks in large part to the scoring efforts of
Joshua Cabezudo and
Dan Porcic, leading to their team being up by 10 points at the half.
The offensive success continued into the early goings of the second half. After Maritime made it an eight point game in the first minute of action, back to back baskets from Porcic and
Dillon Hod put the Dolphins ahead by 11 points, their largest lead of the evening. From there, the Privateers would continue to chip away at the deficit and eventually regained their lead at the 14:39 mark.
The swing in momentum in favor of the Privateers was enough to keep the home team on top for good. Despite continuing to battle – including big baskets in the final minutes from Hod and
DJ Tucker – the Dolphins eventually saw their win streak come to a halt.
CMSV had four scorers in double figures, including Cabezudo, who had a team-best 19 points with a 53% shooting percentage to go along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Tucker added 15 points, six boards, four assists and a pair of assists of his own while Porcic and Hod had 11 points apiece. Lewis was the lone bench player to enter the scoring column with six points. Porcic also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
The Dolphins will look to return to their winning ways in a rare late season non-conference matchup against the Pratt Institute on Thursday.
