Dolphins Drop Close Battle Against Cannoneers

Riverdale, NY - Despite strong scoring efforts from offensive leaders DJ Tucker and Joshua Cabezudo, the Pratt Institute was too tough of a matchup to overcome for the College of Mount Saint Vincent, as the Dolphins dropped the tightly contested affair by the score of 75-71. The Dolphins were able to make it a game with less than a minute remaining, but the Cannoneers and their clutch free throws made the difference, as the visitors were able to stay on top as time expired.

CMSV is now 1-6 to kick off the 2023-24 campaign.

Pratt executed in a major way offensively throughout the first 10 minutes of action. The Cannoneers connected on over 60% of their shot attempts, putting the Dolphins in an early double digit hole with less than 10 minutes to go in the half. From there, however, the Dolphins picked up their efforts and made it a game. The duo of Tucker and Cabezudo were the driving forces behind the surge, as the pair combined for nine of the team's 13 points over a three minute stretch that saw CMSV tie things up at 27. Both sides would trade leads for the rest of the half, and a Tucker three with time expiring brought the Dolphins within five at the break.

Junior transfer Kevin Agyemang picked up the pace in the second half, opening the period with two offensive rebounds in consecutive possessions, but resulting in baskets for the Dracut, Massachusetts native. Both sides would trade leads once again, with freshmen Connor Wein and Louis Vidal bringing energy on both ends of the floor. Vidal's baseline jumper tied the game at 44 with 11 minutes remaining, with Cabezudo following it up with a layup in the ensuing possession to give CMSV their first lead of the half.

A Wein three point attempt would once again put the Dolphins ahead. From there, however, Pratt would find their way back on top, both by making tough shots and converting their attempts from the charity stripe. A Tucker three with 30 seconds on the clock made it 74-71 game, but the Cannoneers were able to put things out of reach when they knocked down a free throw of their own.

Tucker had his best afternoon of the young season, posting a season-high 22 points while adding seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in a well-rounded afternoon. Cabezudo continued to be a force both in the scoring column and on the boards with 16 points and 10 rebounds, seven of which game on the offensive glass. Wein also reached double figures for the first time in his collegiate career with 10 points on 50% shooting.

Next up for the Dolphins is another non-conference showdown, this time on the road against Penn State Abington. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM on Monday.
