Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team took part in the second leg of a double header inside the Sharp Center, following up a women's basketball victory with a matchup against Centenary University. The Dolphins held strong during the first half of action, but a surge from the Cyclones offense over the final 20 minutes of action resulted in a 72-57 loss. The contest put CMSV at 1-6 overall through seven games in the 2034-24 campaign.
It was a tightly contested first half that saw the Dolphins lead for the majority of it. Lead guard
Joshua Cabezudo got things going for his team, scoring six of the first 11 points, with
Jalen Lewis and
Frank Camastro chipping in with scores of their own. Cabezudo ended the half with a team-best 13 points, which helped give the Dolphins a one point edge at the break. CMSV shot 47% as a whole over that span, including knocking down six of seven attempts from the charity stripe.
Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the Cyclones upped their scoring in a major way in the second half. Centenary outscored CMSV 42-26 while limiting turnovers to just three. In the early goings of the second, Cabezudo, along with starters
DJ Tucker,
Kevin Agyemang and
Brian Rawlings each helped keep their team in front by multiple possessions. The Cyclones would go on a 20-4 run at the midway point of the second half, a run that flipped the game on its head for CMSV, eventually leading to the loss.
Despite the loss, Cabezudo continued his impressive start to the season. The Perth Amboy, New Jersey native poured in 21 points on seven of 13 shooting while leading the way with seven rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end. Lewis and Agyemang combined for 15 points while Lewis impressed with a game-high four blocks. Lewis, Tucker and Rawlings each swiped two steals as well.
The Dolphins are looking to return to the win column on Saturday in a home matchup against the Pratt Institute.
