Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's basketball team opened Skyline Conference play on Tuesday evening, playing host to Yeshiva University in an early conference showdown featuring two teams with playoff hopes. Despite going toe-to-toe with the Maccabees at various points of the contest, the visitors were too tall of a task to overcome, as CMSV dropped the game by the score of 82-68. The Dolphins dropped to 1-4 on the year.
It was apparent that the Dolphins were up for the challege in the opening minutes. Both CMSV and Yeshiva traded baskets, with the game remaining a one possession contest for a majority of the first half. The ball was distrubted all over the Dolphins offense, with starters
Kevin Agyemang,
Joshua Cabezudo,
Adrian Rraci,
Haven Smith and
DJ Tucker all recording baskets over that span. A
Brian Rawlings three pointer with 47 seconds remaining in the contest cut the Maccabees lead to 10 at the break.
Head coach
James Mooney saw the deficit balloon to 13 points at the 18:43 mark, and it was at that point where he looked to his second unit to bring energy to the Sharp Center. Rawlings,
Jalen Lewis,
Connor Wein,
Gerard Novello and
Gurjot Singh got the first call, with guards
Frank Camastro and
Louis Vidal following suit. It was at that point when CMSV began to show signs of life. Utilizing a full court press, the Dolphins were able to bring the deficit back to 10 points when Novello knocked down a pair of free throws.
Jalen Lewis converted a layup attempt in the ensuing possession, bringing the game to its closet point since the first half.
The starters came back in and furthered tried to get back in the game. Points from Cabezudo, Rraci and Tucker put the Maccabees lead to single digits in the waning minutes, but it was too little, too late, as Yeshiva knocked down their late free throws to walk away with the win.
Cabezudo continued the strong start to his senior season, as the guard scored 15 efficient points on five of eight shooting. Camastro impressed with 10 points off the bench while Tucker and Rraci combined for 11 rebounds. Cabezudo also paced the Dolphins in both assists (four) and steals (two).
The next challenge for the Dolphins will come over Thanksgiving break when they partake in a tournament up north hosted by Springfield College.
