Dolphins Advance To Skyline Semifinal In Thrilling Penalty Kick Shootout

King's Point, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent and the United States Merchant Marine Academy competed in one of the most impressive first round playoff matchups you'll see. The two sides, who played to a tie during the regular season, had a similar fate in the the opening contest of the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament, as the Dolphins and Mariners played to a 1-1 tie across regulation and both overtime periods.

CMSV took full advantage of the shootout period, with the Dolphins winning 8-7, earning a shot at the top-seeded Manhattanville College Valiants in the Skyline Conference semifinal round.

USMMA put the momentum in their favor early on. At just the 11 minute mark, the Mariners put a shot past goaltender Joel Luna, giving the team a one goal edge early on. To the Dolphins' credit, they didn't let the deficit dictate their play, as they continued to play a physical brand of soccer while trying to put shots on goal. With seven minutes remaining in the first half, the Dolphins received a boost from standout transfer Jenluis Henriquez, whose impressive first season in Riverdale has been marred with injuries.

The first-year Dolphin picked a great time to to score the first goal of his young career when he carried the ball from the top of the box to his left, shot across his body and put one through the the opposing goaltender's hands.

From there, the game became a defensive battle. The Dolphins would take just five shots the rest of the way, but starting keeper Joel Luna would do his part to keep CMSV in it. Despite facing 19 shots between the second half and both overtime periods, the senior made five saves to send it to penalty kicks.

The Dolphins were a perfect 8-for-8 throughout the shootout, with Luna, Oscar Billman, Justin Betancourt, Ian Lamas, Donovan Speer, Sebastian Mesa, Jason Otiniano and Lucas Cunha all scoring on their chances. Luna stood tall on USMMA's eighth attempt, with the San Diego, California native sending his team to the next round with a diving save in the rain.

The semifinal will serve as a rematch from the 2021 final that saw the Dolphins win their first Skyline title in program history. Both sides battled to a 0-0 tie in their lone regular season matchup.
