Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's soccer team closed out the regular season at home on Tuesday in a contest against the United States Merchant Marine Academy, one with Skyline Conference postseason implications hanging in the balance. The Dolphins and Mariners battled evenly throughout the contest, with the final score being a 1-1 finish. CMSV wraps up their regular season with an overall record of 10-5-3 and a conference mark of 7-1-3, good for a spot in the conference tournament.
The Dolphins impressed in the early going, continuously winning the possession battle while keeping up a strong attack on the offensive end. It was just 17 minutes into the game when sophomore
Victoria Gamarra reached double digits on her season total, as she went on to score her 10th goal of 2023. Gamarra secured the ball off a beautiful touch at the top of the box from midfielder
Alicia Rodriguez, dribbled past the defender and converted the shot to put her team on the board.
To USMMA's credit, they formulated a strong push in the second half, as they ended up out-shooting the Dolphins 7-6 over the first half of play, and if it wasn't for a tremendous diving save from goaltender
Javiera Sanchez, the game would've been knotted up at one much early.
CMSV came out firing in the second half, too. They took seven of their 11 second half shots within the first 16 minutes, with the Mariners doing a strong job stifling each attempt. The Mariners were able to break behind the strong Dolphins defense and take a shot off a rebound that tied things up at the 79 minute mark. Freshman phenom
Caitlyn Thompson had a chance to give her team the lead with less than a minute to go, but the free kick attempt was blocked.
Playoff seeding remains in the balance, but the Dolphins efforts won't go unnoticed. The team is expected to host Saturday's quarterfinal matchup, with a time and opponent to be determined.
