Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's volleyball team continued their strong stretch of games on Thursday evening when they went on to defeat the College at Old Westbury in four sets, extending the team's winning streak to three. The Dolphins have found a groove in mid-October and it has been reflected in the standings; not only have they improved to 7-8 overall and 3-4 against the Skyline, but they've now inched closer to a playoff berth. CMSV currently sits one spot out of the postseason bracket with four conference games remaining on their schedule.
Head coach
Harris Boyes utilized multiple different players in various spots, something that took adjusting to. Despite losing the first set 25-23, the tone was set by captains
Melanieann Broderick and
Elizabeth Flores for the rest of the contest, as the senior duo combined for six kills. The second set saw the Dolphins revert to successful volleyball, with freshman
Jocelyn Castro spearheading the charge with a four kill, three block effort. The Bronx, New York native starred in two of the team's runs, including a six-point streak that concluded the set. It was there where Castro picked up two of her seven kills.
The third set saw freshmen standouts
Adelina Elezaj and Nicolle Sullivan power their team, with Elezaj picking up three kills while Sullivan added eight assists and four service aces. It was transfer sophomore
Reilly Nichtern's time to shine in the evening affair in the fourth. The hitter from Rockaway, New York recorded five services aces, two kills and a pair of digs in a set that saw the Dolphins win by the score of 25-14.
Broderick finished with a team-best 10 kills while Sullivan and graduate student
Brianna Ayuso both found success at the setter position with a combined 31 helpers. Flores and freshman
Carly Snyder tied for 12 digs each, both team bests, while Castro's five total blocks put her atop the Skyline rankings in that category with 34.
The Dolphins will look to extend their win streak to four on Thursday when they have two games - one against Baruch College and another against conference foe Yeshiva University.
