Second Half Surge Pushes Dolphins Into Playoff Contention

Yonkers, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's soccer team entered the weekend looking to climb the Skyline Conference standings with playoffs on the horizon. The team did just that against Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, with the team scoring four unanswered second half goals, resulting in a 4-0 win. It brought CMSV's conference record to 3-2-2, pushing them into the playoff picture in the process.

Both sides fought evenly in the first half. A combined 11 shots were taken between the Dolphins and Gryphons, with CMSV good for six of them. The defense set the tone, as defenders Donovan Speer, Justin Betancourt and Cesar Mendez led the way in not allowing any Sarah Lawrence shot to reach starting goaltender Joel Luna over the first 45 minutes of play.

The momentum that the defense set in the first half transferred to the offense in the second. The Dolphins scored four goals at that point, with senior Ian Lamas getting things going in the 50th minute. Speer and midfielder Jason Otiniano would both add to the scoreboard before Lamas sealed the deal with just four minutes remaining, bringing his season total to seven.

While the offense dominated on their end of the field, Luna did on the opposite side. The senior keeper saw an uptick in shots on goal, as he made seven saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season.

Skyline play rolls into this week. The first matchup for the Dolphins will be on the road against Purchase College this coming Tuesday.
