Kings Point, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's soccer team returned to the pitch on Tuesday evening, looking to avenge the loss at the hands of Manhattanville College over the weekend. While they didn't lose to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Dolphins had their second tie in three games against conference competition, with the game ending up knotted at two goals apiece.
The Dolphins are now 1-1-2 against the Skyline this season.
After 16 minutes of action, the Dolphins got on the board thanks to
Ian Lamas, reigning first team All-Skyline player from a year ago. The junior transfer from Mamaroneck, New York converted a shot attempt after strong passing from
Alejandro Rodriguez,
Augustus McGiff and
Dominic Algieri, with the latter two picking up assists. With the Dolphins on the board, eyes shifted towards the defense, with goaltender
Joel Luna specifically having a strong half. The second-year starter turned away all seven shots he faced, picking up four saves in the process.
Things began to shift in favor of USMMA in the second half. Just 10 minutes into play, Luna mishandled a shot attempt, resulting in the Mariners getting on the board. Less than five minutes later, CMSV responded in a major way, as McGiff converted a penalty kick attempt for his fifth goal of the season, tied for fourth among all conference competitors. At the 70 minute mark, the Mariners successfully took a penalty shot of their own, once again tying the game up.
From there, the Dolphins had multiple chances to take the lead, including shot attempts from Algieri and midfielder
Ruben Collazos.
Carlos Romero had an opportunity to regain his team's lead, but USMMA's backup goaltender stifled his penalty shot with just three minutes left in regulation.
Luna tied his career-high with 10 saves while Lamas and McGiff paced the Dolphins with two shots on goal apiece.
CMSV will get a chance to regroup, as their next game takes place this coming Sunday against Old Westbury.
