Farmingdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's soccer team returned to form on Sunday evening, with their balanced attack overwhelming the College of Old Westbury, resulting in a 2-1 victory in favor of the Dolphins. The win was an important one for CMSV, as they entered play 0-1-2 in their last three contests.
It didn't take long for the Dolphins offense to put the team on top. Freshman
Augustus McGiff continued his tremendous rookie campaign for CMSV when he buried a goal from the top of the box, good for his sixth of the season. It all started when sophomore
Mario Bunjaj was able to fire a pass off to McGiff after working past two Panthers defenders, leading to the first point of the game.
The first half would end without any other goals from either side, but it wasn't for a lack of trying for the Dolphins. CMSV outshot Old Westbury nine shots to just one, with McGiff,
Ruben Collazos,
Dominic Algieri,
Donovan Speer and
Alejandro Rodriguez all putting shots on goal. At the same time, the Dolphins' defense, led by Speer,
Dennis Andino and
Justin Betancourt, did a tremendous job stifling the Panthers offense.
The second half remained quiet until the final 10 minutes of play. With the game approaching the 83rd minute of action, Bunjaj dribbled past multiple Old Westbury defenders from midfield to the top of the box, where he fired his third shot of the game, resulting in his first career goal as a Dolphin. Outside of a penalty kick conversion just two minutes later, junior goalkeeper
Erick Pantoja had a tremendous night in net, as he collected three saves.
CMSV will look to carry their momentum into the next contest as Skyline Play rolls on. The Dolphins are scheduled to clash with St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn this coming Wednesday.
