Throggs Neck, NY - After a week long layoff, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's volleyball team returned to the court and opened Skyline Conference play on Wednesday evening, battling SUNY Maritime in Throggs Neck. The night was a big one for the Dolphins; not only did the team get their first victory of the season, but head coach
Matthew Johann collected his first career win as a collegiate head coach.
Despite winning in consecutive sets, it was a tough battle between the Dolphins and the Privateers, with each set finishing by just two points each (30-28, 25-23, 25-23).
The junior duo of
Melanieann Broderick and
Elizabeth Flores dominated the court for CMSV, with Broderick leading the way with 18 kills while Flores added an impressive 15 of her own. Sophomore
Lydia Aryee did a fantastic job setting up her teammates, as she registered a career-high 28 assists.
Isabella Garcia shined both offensively and defensively, leading the way in digs while adding five helpers. Freshman libero
Emma Contes added two service aces on the stat sheet, one of which helped start the Dolphins' first set win.
CMSV has a packed weekend, starting off with a tri-match against Mount Saint Mary and John Jay on Saturday, followed up by a tri-match against SUNY-Delhi and King's College just 24 hours later. They'll return home on Tuesday to take on USMMA, a rematch from the Skyline semifinals a season ago.
