New York, NY - Fresh off the heels of the program's first Skyline Conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance, the Dolphins took the field for the first time in 2022, looking to start off on the right foot. Despite the number of new faces on the rosters, the Dolphins looked a lot like last year's squad, cruising to a two goal victory over Hunter College.
Carlos Romero, last year's conference Rookie of the Year and the championship game's Most Outstanding Player, picked up right where he left off in 2021. The sophomore midfielder made an impressive steal while defending and turned around for a quick strike to put his team up by one in the first minute of action. CMSV dominated the rest of the first half, with the back wall of
Tyrone Malango,
Justin Betancourt and
Donovan Speer forcing turnover after turnover against the Hawks strikers.
The second half was reminiscent of the first, but this time it was impressive freshman
Augustus McGiff who put his team off the board. After a yellow card by the Hawks, the Bellport, New York native took the free kick and buried it past the goalkeeper from the top of the box for his first collegiate goal. The dominance continued, with junior goalkeeper
Erick Pantoja turning away each shot he faced.
The new faces made an impact for the Dolphins, with Betancourt, Speer, McGiff,
Nicholas Guardino,
Jovanny Ortiz,
Lucas Turano and
Mario Bunjaj all receiving the starting nod from head coach
Tommy Mattera. Newcomers
Marc Jourdain,
Dominic Algieri,
Mauro LaGrasta and
Jonathan Fragoso each came off the bench in the victory.
The familiar faces made an impact, too. First team All-Skyline recipient
Ian Lamas took a team high four shots with
Luke St. Denis and
Juan Cardenas aiding the team.
The Dolphins will look to keep up their winning ways this coming Saturday when they host John Jay College at Randall's Island. Stay tuned to CMSVAthletics.com to follow along.
