New York, NY - The Dolphins called Randall's Island home for the second time this season - and for the second straight game, they pitched a shutout. After defeating Hunter College in the season opener on Thursday, CMSV picked up right where they left off, this time handedly beating John Jay College four goals to none in a Saturday night affair.
Just like Thursday night, the defense set the tone for
Tommy Mattera's team. The back line of
Tyrone Malango,
Justin Betancourt,
Donovan Speer and
Marc Jourdain stifled the Bloodhound's defense for all 90 minutes, as they allowed just one shot to reach goaltender
Erick Pantoja, who turned away the lone attempt. Their combined effort has been a major driving force behind the two victories.
The offense, meanwhile, matched the defense's intensity and production. And it was a freshmen affair for CMSV, as four first-year players put the game away for the Dolphins.
First up was
Jovanny Ortiz, who connected on the first goal of the contest off a cross-field pass from fellow freshman
Dominic Algieri after crashing the box. Algieri would add to his stat sheet early in the second half, when he converted an impressive penalty kick to make it a 2-0 game.
Sophomore transfer
Mario Bunjaj helped set up two teammates, the first of which came when he intercepted the ball at midfield and passed an impressive through-ball to freshman
Augustus McGiff, who sprinted to the box for his second goal in as many games. Bunjaj impressed with another touch, this time to first-year player
Mauro LaGrasta, who put the cherry on top of the contest when he finished one past John Jay's goaltender.
Ortiz, Algieri and LaGrasta each collected the first goal of their collegiate careers.
With two impressive games completed, the Dolphins now set their sights on arguably the biggest match of their career: #2 Amherst College. CMSV will travel to Massachusetts to take on the nationally ranked Mammoths this coming Tuesday, with kick-off scheduled for 7 PM.
