Newburgh, NY- The CMSV softball team traveled to Newburgh to face off against the Knights of Mount Saint Mary's College in a Skyline Conference doubleheader. The Dolphins were swept by the Knights, 16-3 and 15-4.
The Dolphins have struggled this season, and the matchup with the Knights wasn't much different as they only managed six hits and three runs in the first game.Â
CMSV allowed four early runs in the first inning and it would prove to be detrimental as the Dolphins would fight from behind the rest of the game.Â
The Dolphins started their run in the third inning when senior Ariana Rentas was walked and brought home on a double by sophomore Kaitlin Cirillo, but the Knights responded with eight runs in the same inning and four in the next inning to take a 16-1 lead going into the final inning.Â
The final inning the Dolphins would attempt to complete a huge comeback. Rentas scored for the second time of the game behind a single from sophomore Aimee Vega and an error by the Knights.Â
Another wild pitch scored junior Jocelyn Vega, but that would be all for the Dolphins as they fell in the first matchup, 16-3.
The second matchup started much better for the Dolphins as they scored the first two runs in the first inning. J. Vega started the game off with a two-run homer to left center to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead in the first.Â
The Dolphins allowed three runs in the same inning, and allowed eight in the second inning to give the Knights an 11-2 lead.
The Dolphins looked to comeback as they scored in each of the last three innings. J. Vega singled to start the inning, and later scored on a single by Cirillo and a throwing error by the Knights.Â
Junior Celine Vaughn scored for the Dolphins in the fourth inning on a double from freshman Sierra Romero to cut the deficit to 11-3. The Dolphins allowed four more runs in the bottom of the fourth.Â
The final inning for the Dolphins saw three singles from J. Vega, senior Renee Hoerning, and a run scored on junior Katie Hutter's base hit, but that was all for the Dolphins as they fell to the Knights, 15-4.
The Dolphins look to end their season on a high note in the last few weeks of play as they take on Manhattanville College on Saturday April 16th.
