New York, NY – The CMSV softball team entered Tuesday afternoon looking for their first win in the 2022 season after dropping their opening weekend double header against Stevens Tech. The Dolphins did just that, splitting the two games against local rival Hunter College. The Hawks took game one by the score of 6-4 while
Miguel Justiniano's club topped Hunter 8-7 in game two.
The Dolphins are now 1-3 through four games thus far.
The first contest saw junior
Katie Hutter take the mound for the third time this season. The Carle Place, New York native went the distance for the Dolphins, allowing just four runs on seven hits while striking out seven.
The team's offense flexed their muscles despite being on the losing end of the contest. Sophomore
Kaitlin Cirillo launched the first home run of her career in a two-hit effort on Tuesday. Teammate
Jocelyn Vega added a two-run home run of her own, with the two hitters combining for all four runs.
The second game was a different story. The Dolphins' offense was firing on all cylinders, with nine of the 10 players who had an at-bat recording at least one hit. Vega led the way with three hits while senior
Arianna Rentas and freshman
Sierra Romero paced CMSV with two RBI each.
Lakisha Camacho,
Aimee Vega,
Lorna Alec and
Renee Hoerning drove in runs as well while Cirillo, Camacho,
Aimee Vega and Romero had two hits apiece.
Speaking of Alec, the freshman had a coming out party on the mound. In her first collegiate start, Alec struck out six Hawks in seven innings while allowing nine hits and six earned runs. Her efforts also awarded her the first win of her career.
With Thursday off, the Dolphins will get back on the diamond on Friday against Lehman College.
