Riverdale, NY - After a tough last second loss to Farmingdale State last week, the Dolphins continued their string of Skyline Conference games, this time at home against St. Joseph's University Long Island. CMSV came back late, but ultimately fell short to the Golden Eagles by the score of 47-44. Senior guard
Amber Been showed her offensive prowess before fouling out in the final minute, scoring a team-high 18 points while adding six rebounds and three steals.
The Dolphins struggled offensively in the first quarter, as they shot just 15% from the floor. The team stepped up in the second quarter, as they scored 15 total points on six of 15 shooting while also knocking down 50% of their three point attempts. Been and junior guard
Kayla Hanley stepped on offensively for the team, as they combined for 17 first half points while combining to go seven of 10 from the charity stripe.
The Golden Eagles came out of halftime in impressive fashion, as the visitiors put together a 9-0 run to open the third quarter. The Dolphins battled on both ends of the floor, causing 14 total turnovers as time expired in the third. CMSV saved their best effort for the final period, with the team firing on all cylinders to make it a close game.
The momentum began to swing with seven minutes to go in the contest. Senior
Kira Villegas knocked down a deep three point attempt to make it a 42-36 game, getting the crowd on their feet in the process. In the ensuing Golden Eagles possession, Hanley caused a turnover, picked up the steal, sprinted to the basket and scored before being fouled. The Yonkers, New York native made it a three point game after knocking down the free throw attempt. Been scored layups in consecutive possessions, answering St. Joe's each time to make it a one point contest with less than four minutes to go. The team's would both clamp down defensively, but the Dolphins failed to convert a last second three to tie things up, resulting in the loss.
In additional to Been, Hanley (11 points, seven rebounds, five assists) and Villegas (10 points, 10 rebounds) also finished in double figures.
Melanieann Broderick feasted on the boards, adding 17 rebounds of her own to the stat line.
The Dolphins will use Wednesday to regroup before taking their home floor for the second straight game. They'll head back to non-conference play and battle John Jay on Thursday.
