Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's volleyball team's growth continued on Monday night in their home matchup against Farmingdale State College. Despite dropping the contest three sets to one, the Dolphins took the first set and impressed throughout the contest. The result may have not been one the team was looking for, but the program's collective maturation was on full display in front of the raucous Peter Jay Sharp Center crowd.
The Dolphins are now 1-3 against Skyline opponents.
The first set was possibly the best Matt Johann's squad has put together thus far. After trading points with the Rams over the first half of the set, the Dolphins began to pull away when they were up 16-15. From there, CMSV rattled off seven straight points, highlighted by kills from
Elizabeth Flores,
Melanieann Broderick and
Katelynn Fanjul. The Dolphins would walk away with a 25-20 set victory.
The second set looked similar to the first, with the Rams and Dolphins trading points for the majority of it. Things got interested towards the end of the set when Flores put her team up 22-21 off a strong pass from new setter
Charlotte Martin. The set would tie back up at 23 before the Rams pulled away to even things up at one apiece.
From there, Farmingdale showed why they're one of the top teams in the conference, pulling away in the final two sets of action. But it wasn't for a lack of effort on CMSV's end, as the Dolphins battled until the final whistle.
Broderick ended her night leading the team once again with 15 kills, giving her 107 on the season. The hitter also added 10 digs and two aces to the stat sheet. Flores finished just behind Broderick with 13 kills to go along with 10 digs and a block of her own.
Charlotte Martin and
Lydia Aryee both worked as setters on Monday, with the two combining for 33 assists.
Isabella Garcia continued her strong season at libero, with a team-high 20 digs.
Despite the loss, the momentum continues to sway in the team's favor. They'll look to capitalize on it this coming Wednesday when they host Purchase College.
