Riverdale, NY - It was the regular season finale for the College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's soccer team, but it may as well have been a playoff game, as the Dolphins and Farmingdale State College went to battle with a first round bye in the Skyline Conference Playoffs in the balance. After falling behind 1-0 early, the Dolphins responded in a major way, scoring three straight goals en route to the first ever win against the Rams in program history. The Dolphins finished their regular season with a 10-1 mark against the conference and will enter next week with an automatic bid into the semifinals.
Farmingdale struck early, as the road team scored within the first 16 minutes of play while controlling the possession battle. The goal could've deterred the Dolphins, but it instead motivated them, as
Stuart Dick's squad rose to the challenge and played their best brand of soccer for the remainder of the contest.
In the 29th minute,
Emily McCarthy - one of the top offensive players in program history - did what she's done throughout her career and put her team on the board when she received an impressive through-ball and buried it past the Rams' goalkeeper. The game went into halftime tied at one.
The Dolphins picked up right where they left off, as they dominated Farmingdale over the course of the second half. The team scored back-to-back goals within the first seven minutes of the half. The first once again came from McCarthy, who shot an absolute laser into the top right of the net to give her team the lead. Freshman
Kailey Conner continued her strong first season with CMSV when she attacked the box and scored off an assist from
Victoria Gamarra to ensure the win.
As a whole, the Dolphins out-shot Farmingdale 25-11, with 16 of them getting on goal.
Brooke Frierson received the start in net and made six saves.
CMSV will get the weekend off as they prepare for their second straight season making a semifinals appearance.
