Riverdale, NY - Wednesday afternoon was a big day in the history of CMSV Athletics, as the department hosted the first ever game on campus to be played on a turf surface in front of a packed crowd of administrations, student-athletes, faculty, family and friends. The women's soccer program had the opportunity to break in Marillac Field in a major way, and they responded to the challenge as they went on to defeat St. Joseph's University Long Island five goals to one. The Skyline showdown featured two teams with even records (5-1) against conference competition, and the win catapulted the Dolphins into the conversation of best team in the Skyline.
Stuart Dick's squad dominated from the first whistle, with the team firing off 13 first half shots. Only one of those saw the net, however, and it was off the foot of standout freshman
Victoria Gamarra. The first-year forward was on the receiving end of a challenging
Dana DeDominicis, with the fellow freshman dribbling from midfield to find Gamarra, who fought off a defender and scored her fifth goal of the season. Despite the half ending with the Dolphins up one, the home team won the possession battle while the defense, led by Dominicis,
Riley Leedholm and
Mazy Wright, allowed just one shot from the Golden Eagles.
CMSV turned up the pressure on offense in the second half, and it was reflected on the scoreboard. It was less than five minutes into the second half when freshman
Kailey Conner scored the first goal of her collegiate career when she took a shot across her body that went off the opposing goalkeepers hands. The Golden Eagles made it a 2-1 game in the 68th minute, but Dolphins went on to score three more goals in a nine minute span before time expired. Seniors
Lilli Marin and
Emily McCarthy, as well as sophomore
Alicia Rodriguez, each scored to give their team their sixth conference win in seven tries.
McCarthy finished the game with a goal and two helpers, giving her 17 points on the season, while Rodriguez and Conner each had a goal and an assist. Sophomore
Brooke Frierson spent all 90 minutes in net and made two saves.
The Dolphins, winners of five straight, are set to host St. Joseph's University Brooklyn during Reunion and Homecoming Weekend this Saturday. They'll look to keep up their winning ways starting at 1 PM on Marillac Field.
