Teaneck, NJ - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's soccer to stepped onto the pitch for the first time since the 2019 season, equipped with both new leadership and a retooled roster. The Dolphins wasted no time starting off their season on the right foot, as they earned an overtime victory over Skyline Conference rival Yeshiva University.
The first half saw a defensive battle between both CMSV and the Maccabees, thanks in large part to veteran defenders
Luciano Cirelli and
Antonio Padilla, who were joined by first-year starters
Joel Luna and
Fernando Guzman.
Over the final 45 minutes of regulation, both offenses took over the contest. Yeshiva struck first when the Maccabees converted a rebound off the cross bar in the 55th minute to give them the one goal edge. It took nearly 30 minutes, but CMSV bounced back off the foot of junior transfer
Ian Lamas, as he converted a 25-yard free kick in the 84th minute to tie the game at one goal apiece. The newcomer took things over once more in overtime, scoring from 20 yards out off a feed from freshman
Ruben Collazos, who secured his first career assist.
Luna had a fantastic first start in net, turning away 10 of the 11 shots he faced.
With their first victory in the rearview mirror, the Dolphins will set their sights on Lehman College, who they'll square off against on September 11. Stay tuned to CMSVAthletics.com to follow all the action live.
