Patchogue, NY - The CMSV softball team traveled to Patchogue to face off against the Bears of St. Joseph's College- Brooklyn. The Dolphins split the series with the Bears losing the first matchup 6-4, but bounced back to defeat them 15-10.
The first matchup's score reflected in the closeness of the game. The Bears were the first to put a run on the board, but the Dolphins responded back with two runs of their own in the fourth inning.
Junior Alicia Blevins started off the inning by reaching on a bunt to third base. Freshman pitcher Katie Hutter doubled to left field, bringing home Blevins from first. Jocelyn Vega kept the bats rolling as she singled to left field to bring Hutter home.
The Bears responded quickly as they scored five runs in the fifth inning, to push their lead to four runs, but the Dolphins were not out of the game yet as they made one final push in the seventh inning.
Junior Renee Hoerning singled to center field to advance freshman Kaitlin Cirillo to second base. Junior Lakisha Camacho hit a huge double to bring home Cirillo and Arianna Rentas (pinch runner), but that would be the end of the run for the Dolphins after an out at second.
The Dolphins bounced back in a big way, putting up 15 runs in the second matchup. After the third inning, the score was 8-6 in favor of the Dolphins, but a combined nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings put CMSV ahead 15-8. The highlight of the afternoon was freshman Aimee Vega, who posted the first home run of her collegiate career. Her second inning long ball was the catalyst to the Dolphins' victory in game two.
The Dolphin defense would then shut the door on any chance at a comeback in the seventh inning as they would go on to defeat the Bears.
The Dolphins look to build on this win for their future games.
