Softball Splits Opening Weekend Double Header Against Golden Eagles

Patchogue, NY - CMSV's softball program finally returned to the field after a year as they traveled out to Patchogue to take on St. Joseph's College-Long Island in a Skyline Conference double header on Saturday afternoon. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the afternoon and split the opening series; the Dolphins took game one by the score of 5-4, while the Golden Eagles came back with a force in game two, winning by eight runs.

Junior Lakisha Camacho started things off for the Dolphins in game one, as her single in the second inning drove in a pair of runs to give CMSV an early 2-0 edge. Captain Abigail Laurendeau added to the Dolphins' offense, with a single of her own bringing the score to 3-0. It was then freshman Kaitlin Cirillo's turn, as the West Nyack, New York native collected her first hit and RBI of her collegiate career, giving the Dolphins a 4-0 lead in just two innings of play.

Over the course of three innings, it was the Golden Eagles' turn to fight back, as St. Joe's was able to tie things up heading into the seventh. But Jocelyn Vega put an end to their comeback, as her double to right field drove in Cirillo with the eventual game winning run. Cirillo and Aimee Vega paced the Dolphins with two hits apiece while Camacho had a team-high two RBI. Katie Hutter got the first start of the season and went the distance, with eight strikeouts collected along the way.

The second contest looked just as promising for the Dolphins, as Vega, Cirillo and Hutter all drove in runs to put CMSV up by five after two innings. But that was all for the Dolphins, as St. Joe's LI stormed back and scored 13 unanswered runs to end it in five.

The Dolphins and Golden Eagles will be back for another double header on Monday. Game times are set for 2 PM and 4 PM.
