Patchogue, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball program returned to the field on Sunday morning, traveling to Patchogue to take on St. Joseph's College-Long Island in a Skyline Conference double header. Both the Dolphins and Golden Eagles battled over the two game set, with the teams splitting each contest. St. Joe's won a tight first game by the score of 5-2, with CMSV emerging victorious by six runs in the second game of the day.
The Dolphins are now 3-1 in the 2021 campaign.
CMSV picked up right where they left off from last weekend. After
Isidoros Bartziokas reached base with a one out walk, senior outfielder
Anthony Nocero flexed his muscles and sent the ball over the left center field fence, good for his first home run of the season, resulting in a 2-0 game in favor of the Dolphins before the Golden Eagles could come to bat. But from there it was all St. Joe's who tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning and tacked on three additional runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Dolphins, who had just five hits in game one, had their chances in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't capitalize on the late rally.
Sophomore
Andrew Geiger got the start and pitched admirably despite the outcome. The Naples, Florida native allowed just two earned runs to cross the plate to go along with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
CMSV's offense once again broke things open early on in game two. It started in the top of the first inning when sophomore
Michael Grisanti doubled home
Jake Blinstrub and
Matt DiNorcia to make it a 2-0 game. The Dolphins' lead was extended to three on an
Eric Zimmermann fielder's choice.
The offense continued to roll in the following inning, with Blinstrub and DiNorcia collecting an RBI each to bring the score to 5-0. Catcher
Matt Albert, DiNorcia and Blinstrub each drove in runs in the second half of the contest to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore
Aidan Rice continued his strong start to the 2021 season, as he allowed just two runs on eight hits while striking out six in six strong innings. Senior
Sean McHugh pitched in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, while standout junior
Peter Sanderson got his first taste of action this year in the ninth.
The Dolphins will head back to Long Island Monday afternoon for a third game against the Golden Eagles, where they'll look to earn their fourth win on the year. Tune into CMSVAthletics.com to follow along live.
