Box Score 2 Farmingdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball program finally returned to the field on Sunday after a full year of no action. The team was clearly fired up to be back on the diamond, as the Dolphins swept a double header against the Bears of St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn. Game one was an offensive rout, with CMSV securing an 18-1 victory. Despite back and forth action early on in the second contest, the Dolphins ultimately overpowered the Bears by nine.
CMSV was originally set to take on St. Joseph's College - Long Island, but the four game series was postponed. No makeup date has been announced.
The Dolphins didn't waste any time on the offensive end, as leadoff hitter Jake Blinstrub opened the game with a triple and subsequently scored on an Anthony Nocero double play groundout. CMSV tacked on two additional runs in the second inning thanks to a two-RBI single by Blinstrub through the right side, bringing home Jake Pierre and Matt Albert.
The contest was all but finished at the end of the third inning after the Dolphins scored 10 runs on nine hits. The outpouring started with a deep home run by Michael Grisanti, who cleared the left field wall with ease, making it a 4-0 contest. The carousel continued from there, as Eric Zimmermann, Jordan Perykasz, Matt DiNorcia, Pierre, Blinstrub and Sean Kennedy consecutively reached base and accounted for seven runs scored. Grisanti then doubled in a run, with Zimmermann following suit with a single that drove in two more.
DiNorcia capped the game off with a bases clearing triple to drive home three more Dolphins, resulting in a team-high four RBI for the game. Blinstrub collected a game-high five hits in six at-bats.
For as strong as the offense was, so was CMSV's pitching. Sophomore Aidan Rice got the Opening Day start and impressed after striking out four and allowing just three baserunners in five strong innings of work. Classmate Andrew Geiger closed the door on the Bears with two shutout frames of relief.
The Dolphins picked up right where they left off in game two, scoring seven runs before the Bears could record their first at-bat. Blinstrub, Isidoros Bartziokas and Nocero reached base in consecutive at-bats to set the stage for Grisanti, who scorched a two-RBI single up the middle. Zimmermann, Dan Blake, Pierre and Blinstrub also collected RBI in the first frame.
The Bears, however, saw their bats come to life in the bottom half of the first, cutting CMSV's lead to four. A DiNorcia single scored Grisanti to make it an 8-3 game in the second. The surge continued in the following inning when Nocero and Zimmermann picked up an RBI apiece to bring the score to 10-3.
St. Joe's Brooklyn kept CMSV on their toes but the Dolphins' offense was too much to match, as they scored five unanswered runs to finish off the sweep.
Freshman Sean Kennedy got the start and faced some struggles in the first inning, but teammate Amir Nitowski was able come in and settle things down for the Dolphins. The graduate student pitched in 3.1 innings of relief and allowed three earned runs on four hits. Sophomore Joe Decandia struck out two in three innings after Nitowski while Pedro Fortoso and Humberto Vela shut the door in the eighth and ninth.
Blinstrub and Grisanti sported a team-high four hits each while Nocero and DiNorcia had three apiece.
The Dolphins, now 2-0 on the year, will get two weeks to recoup before setting their sights on Maritime College. The two teams will compete in in a four-game set starting on March 27, with CMSV's home games taking place at Manhattanville College.
