Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team took on SUNY Old Westbury on the Peter Jay Sharp Center court on Saturday afternoon, looking to win their sixth game in seven tries this season. Both sides battled back and forth throughout the duration of the contest, but the Panthers getting the last laugh, as they walked away with their first win of the 2021-22 season. The Dolphins are now 5-2 to start their year.
It was truly a tale of two halves for the home team. The Dolphins impressed over the first 20 minutes of play, including shooting an impressive 67% from the floor in the second quarter. Their defense was stingy, too, with the Dolphins causing four turnovers while generating five steals. Senior forward
Dez Brown led CMSV with 11 points while
Kira Villegas added nine as she went three of four from beyond the arc.
The second half, however, was a different story. The Dolphins did get tremendous help from junior
Amber Been (14 points, nine rebounds, eight steals, seven assists) and senior
Victoria Hanley (13 points, nine rebounds, six assists), but the Panthers hit continous key buckets, including a late layup to take the one point lead. Villegas had an open look to give her team the win, but the shot unfortunately didn't fall.
Villegas posted a season-high 18 points for CMSV, good for a team-best. Brown finished with 16 of her own while
Melanieann Broderick paced the Dolphins with 11 boards.
The Dolphins will now turn their attention to Sarah Lawrence College. They'll travel to Bronxville for the Skyline matchup this coming Tuesday.
