Riverdale, NY - The men's basketball team was back on the Peter Jay Sharp Center floor for the first time in almost a month on Wednesday evening as they faced off against Old Westbury in their second Skyline Conference contest of the season. The Dolphins put together an efficient effort on both ends of the floor, resulting in an 86-79 victory. The win gives CMSV three in seven games thus far, and they're now 1-1 in the conference.
It was a tightly contested affair over the first 10 minutes of play, with each side trading leads. The Panthers would jump out to a double digit lead with less than nine minutes to play in the first half, but CMSV was able to crawl back and keep the game close with threes from transfer
Dan Porcic on back to back possessions, as well as points from
Aaron Darab and
Elijah McKenzie.
After halftime, the Dolphins came out firing on all cylinders. The Dolphins saw their lead balloon to as many as 18 points, with Porcic and senior
Kelvin Turner-Harris converting three three pointers apiece in the span of four minutes of action. Senior
Jeremiah Simmons was dominating both the mid range game as well as in the paint while former Old Westbury player
Shakirro Samuels played strong on and off ball defense against his former team. The Panthers battled back in the final minutes, but clutch free throws from CMSV put the game on ice, resulting in the win.
Porcic put up a season-high 25 points, thanks in large part from going seven of 12 from deep. Big man
Elijah McKenzie finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two blocks while Simmons (12 points, five boards, four assists, two steals) and Darab (12 points, seven rebounds, six assists) stuffed the stat sheet. As a whole, the Dolphins shot 48% from both the field and beyond the arc while causing 14 turnovers.
Next up for the Dolphins is St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. CMSV will hit the road to face them this coming Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 1 PM.
