Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dolphins Down Rutgers-Newark In Family Battle

Riverdale, NY - It was more than just a game this past Saturday at the College of Mount Saint Vincent when the Dolphins and Rutgers-Newark squared off for the second game of the season. Not only was it that CMSV head coach Phil Stern and Rutgers-Newark head coach Ashley Cieplicki became the first husband and wife to square off against one another in a collegiate matchup, but both sides came together to raise awareness for Snarr, an dog rescue foundation.

There was basketball played, too. And the Dolphins came out victorious, winning by the score of 70-64.

After a tightly contested first quatrer, the Dolphins clamped down on defense while knocking down big shots in their own zone. CMSV allowed just 19 total puts throughout the second and third quarters while converting 50% of their field goal attempts. The Scarlett Raiders stormed back in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to three points with less than three minutes to go. The Dolphins were able to overcome mistakes and knock down free throws to ensure their second win in as many games.

Junior Victoria Hanley stuffed the stat sheet against Rutgers-Newark, as she led the Dolphins with 19 points on seven of 14 shooting while also adding eight rebounds, five assists and a block. Junior transfer Amber Been was a force on both sides of the ball with 17 points and six steals. Kira Villegas (12 points, nine rebounds), Melanieann Broderick (nine points, 11 rebounds) and Dez Brown (11 points, nine rebounds) all just missed double-doubles.

The Dolphins will now set their sights on the Skyline Conference with Farmingdale State coming to Riverdale. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
