Patchogue, NY - The Dolphins advanced to round two of the Skyline Conference Playoffs on Saturday after beating St Joe's Long Island 2-0 in their first round matchup. The Dolphins were victorious in their first playoff game since 2016.
"Getting that first collegiate playoff win was an awesome feeling, the team is ecstatic, it meant a lot to the seniors who were crying tears of joy after the win," senior
Cristina Britton told CMSVAthletics.com after the first playoff win of her career. "We played determined we were all over the field, we were winning every 50-50 ball. We were the better team at the end of the 90 minutes. Now we look ahead to Farmingdale on Wednesday."
The girls came out with a strong mentality to go home with a victory. The Dolphins controlled the first half by creating chances and limiting St Joe's' opportunities. The ladies stuck to their game plan and went into halftime with the score even at zero, with the team poised to have a big second half.
The start of the second half started with the same energy from the first half. The Dolphins continued to apply pressure until the breakthrough came in the 60th minute.
Emily McCarthy picked up the ball from a defensive mistake by St Joe's, with the junior keeping her cool as she faced the Golden Eagles' keeper one on one. The result was inevitable, as McCarthy slotted it passed the keeper and ran off into celebration with her teammates. This goal gave the Dolphins a cushion and an opportunity to see the game out on their terms.
McCarthy doubled the Dolphins' lead in the 83rd minute when
Lena Marin caught the St Joe's defense sleeping and threw the ball to a wide open McCarthy who showed her quality and finished the ball into the top corner. McCarthy's two-goal performance put her ahead of Julian McGowan for the most goals in a single season in program history.
The Dolphins kept a clean sheet with a huge showing from their defense, showcasing the team's work rate and cohesion.
Kora-Lynn McCullough shined making two saves, completing her first ever clean sheet in the Skyline Conference Playoffs.
