Dolphins Fight, Fall Late To Bears

Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent returned to the Peter Jay Sharp Center court looking to extend their winning streak to five after defeating Old Westbury on the road this past Saturday. The Dolphins played host to St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn, who entered play 14-9 overall with a conference record of 12-6.

CMSV struggled mightily in the first quarter, missing all but three shots (3-21) over the first 10 minutes. At the same time, their defense wasn't much better, as they allowed the Bears to score 16 points on five of 13 shooting. The second quarter resembled the team that's currently on a winning streak, as the Dolphins scored 18 points, including three of five three pointers, as well as causing five turnovers. Despite their second quarter success, the Dolphins allowed the Bears score 10 straight points in the final two minutes, resulting in a 10 point deficit at the half.

Senior DarNeisha Brice took 14 shots and led the Dolphins with nine first half points. Sophomore Victoria Hanley continued to stuff the stat sheet with three points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals while freshman Kira Villegas came off the bench and added six points of her own.

The entirety of the second half was an intense battle between the two Skyline Conference clubs. The Dolphins came out of half time on fire, outscoring the Bears 18-9 while going on runs that saw CMSV outscore St. Joe's 7-0 and later 5-0.

The final quarter saw the even matchup continue. Both Brice and junior Aria Rheams put the team on their back, scoring 15 of the Dolphins' 16 points. Unfortunately for the home team, clutch free throws from the Bears were the difference, resulting in the 62-59 loss.

Brice led all scorers with 25 points while Rheams came off the bench and added 10. Rheams and Hanley both notched double digit rebounds, grabbing 11 and 12 respectively. Hanley also had a team-high six assists.

Despite the loss, the Dolphins remain a playoff team. They'll continue to prepare for the postseason in their regular season finale on the road against Farmingdale State this Saturday.
