Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dolphins Fall Short On Road Against Knights

Newburgh, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team was back in action on Thursday evening, traveling to Newburgh to take on the top seeded Mount Saint Mary Knights, who entered play undefeated in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins, who were winners in two of their last three contests, looked to avenge the 12-point loss they suffered at the hands of the Knights over two weeks ago at home.

The first quarter saw the Dolphins struggle on both sides of the floor, as they trailed 22-8 after the first 10 minutes of play, shooting just 25% from the floor while allowing the Knights to convert nine of their 17 shot attempts.

CMSV turned the tide in the second quarter when they outrebounded Mount Saint Mary 11-6, including six offensive rebounds to just one from the Knights. The Dolphins ended up more than doubling their point total with 19, which helped them only trail the Knights by 16 going into halftime despite a rough start to the game.

Freshman Catherine Amodio was a spark plug off the bench, as she provided seven first half points, good for the team lead at that point. Both Aria Rheams and Victoria Hanley also contributed on the offensive end with six points apiece. Ashley Martin dominated the boards with seven first half rebounds.

The Dolphins' strong played carried over from the second quarter to the third. As a whole, the team sported a shooting percentage of 60%, which included 50% from beyond the arc. While CMSV trailed by 14 going into the final quarter of play, there was confidence in a comeback.

CMSV fought hard, as they were able to cut the Knights' lead to 10 with six minutes left in regulation and then finally got within single digits after a corner three from DarNeisha Brice with three minutes and change on the clock. But that was as close as the Dolphins would get, as Mount Saint Mary emerged victorious by the score of 71-55.

Amodio had her best collegiate performance to date, as she poured in 15 points of seven of 11 shooting. Rheams (13) and Brice (10) were the other two Dolphins who finished the contest in double figures. Like Amodio, Martin found continued success after the first half and ended up with a team-high 13 boards.

CMSV will look to return to their winning ways against another tough opponent in the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday. Tip-off at Kings Point is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
