Comeback Attempt By Dolphins Halted By USMMA

Box Score

Kings Point, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team was back on the road on Saturday afternoon, this time traveling to Kings Point to go head to head with the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The Dolphins got their second test in as many games going up against one of the better teams the Skyline Conference has to offer.

Both CMSV and USMMA had strong defensive first quarters, with both teams only scoring single digits after the first 10 minutes of play. The Dolphins continued having a hard time getting points on the board as they sported a field goal percentage of just 21% in the first half, good for just 13 points. The visitors also only knocked down just one of their six three points attempts while missing their only two free throw attempts. The Mariners led 26-13 after the first half of play.

Coach Phil Stern only saw four of his players score throughout the first half - freshman Kiera Villegas led the way with five points while Virginia Olivera had four of her own. Gabriela Goldman and Ashley Martin had two apiece while also pacing their team with four rebounds each as well. Goldman also had a team-high two assists in the first half.

The Dolphins couldn't have came out of halftime any better, as they outscored the Mariners 18-11 to bring the game to a 37-31 score going into the final quarter.

The third started on the right foot when Villegas forced a turnover, leading to an Aria Rheams layup from Victoria Hanley to get the score to 26-15. Both sides teams traded baskets until the CMSV finally got within single digits following a Rheams layup with 5:47 on the clock. On the ensuing possession, Rheams forced a shooting foul and knocked down both to make it 28-21. Rheams continued to have a dominant third as she forced a steal and converted an and one opportunity to make it a four point game. Both Leah Pinili (three pointer) and Catherine Amodio (two free throws) made important buckets to close out the quarter.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the Mariners reverted back to their first half success and took control of the game, resulting in a 51-38 loss.

Rheams' strong third quarter helped her finish with a team-high 11 points. She also added five rebounds and two assists. Amodio once again came off the bench and provided a boost to her team as she ended the game with seven points. Martin paced all Dolphins with seven boards.

CMSV will look to halt their skid against Sarah Lawrence College this coming Wednesday in Riverdale.
