Purchase, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team was back in action on Saturday afternoon when they traveled to Westchester to take on Purchase College. The Dolphins, who entered play with an overall record of 8-7 and Skyline Conference mark of 6-5, were looking to return to the win column after falling to Manhattanville College on their home court this past Wednesday.
The first two quarters of play was all CMSV, as the Dolphins outscored the Panthers 14-8 in the first and 18-13 in the second, giving them a double-digit lead heading into halftime. The Dolphins impressed on both sides of the court during the first half - not only did they shoot 42% from the floor (including 50% from beyond the arc) but they also held Purchase to just eight of 29 shooting while forcing 10 turnovers. CMSV also out-rebounded the Panthers 22-13 over the first 20 minutes of play.
The Panthers found success in the third quarter, but the Dolphins' first half dominance kept them in the lead throughout the duration of the contest. CMSV went six of eight from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, which helped clinch the 67-53 victory.
Kira Villegas and Victoria Hanley, the standout duo of transfers for CMSV, dominated the Skyline Conference matchup. Villegas paced the team with 19 points, which included knocking down five of 11 three point attempts, while also adding three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Hanley was efficient on the offensive end, as she went six of nine from the floor, good for 18 points. She also registered her first double-double of the season with 11 boards.
DarNeisha Brice came off the bench and added 10 points of her own while Aria Rheams continued to dominate the glass with nine rebounds. Ashley Martin added four points and six rebounds of her own.
Now back in the win column, the Dolphins will look to continue to climb conference standings when they face off against Mount Saint Mary College this coming Thursday.
