Newark, NJ - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's men's volleyball team were back in action less than 24 hours after their season opener against Lehman College. The Dolphins traveled to New Jersey to take part in a tri-match hosted by Rutgers-Newark that also featured Messiah College.
CMSV's first match was played against Rutgers-Newark, one of the toughest non-conference opponents the team will face in 2020. The Dolphins struggled, dropping consecutive sets to the Scarlet Raiders 25-9, 25-6 and 25-10.
Like yesterday, junior Jose Estrella led the way with a team-high two kills while Felix Paulino and Christian Santiago registered one apiece. Seniors Padelis Astrinidis (five assists) and Brendan Ryan (seven digs) impressed in their roles on the team while Estrella and Paulino both added one block to the stat sheet. Terence Strehle also added two digs during the match.
Unfortunately for the Dolphins, their struggles continued against Messiah College, as they were swept by the Falcons (25-6, 25-14, 25-10). This time it was the freshman Paulino who paced his teammates with four while Estrella and Strehle combined for three of their own. Estrella also added an ace and three blocks to his season averages while Astrinidis finished with a team high seven assists and two digs.
While the first weekend of action didn't start as planned, the Dolphins will have a chance to regroup before heading up to Massachusetts on February 1 to take part in a tri-match against Northern Vermont University-Johnson and Eastern Nazarene College.
