Baseball Drops Two Close Games To CCNY

Valhalla, NY - Before heading to the Skyline Conference playoffs for the first time in five years, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team had to take care of non-conference foes. First up was the City College of New York, who the Dolphins played in a double header on Sunday. Despite playing inspired baseball throughout, CMSV lost both games by one run apiece.

Similar to game two against Farmingdale on Saturday, the Dolphins got off on the right foot, as Zachary Saunders singled to right field, scoring Nick Saranczak and giving his team a one run lead in the first. After the Beavers tied things up in the second inning, Saunders once again registered an RBI single, this time driving home Isidoros Bartziokas to regain the lead. The junior wasn't done this inning, as he also used his speed to score on a wild pitch. The back and forth affair continued into the fourth inning, as CCNY plated four straight runs to take a 5-3 lead. Anthony Nocero forced a bases loaded walk in the top half of the second to bring the game within one, but CMSV couldn't get any additional runs across the plate, resulting in the loss. Despite picking up the loss, Pedro Fortoso had a strong outing, as he picked up six strikeouts in six frames of work.

The second contest saw the Dolphins get off to another hot start. After CCNY took a one run lead in the bottom half of the first, CMSV scored three runs in the bottom of the second; Dan Blake doubled down the left field line to drive in Bartziokas, and he was followed up by RBI from Tyler Paulino and Jake Blinstrub, which gave the Dolphins a 3-1 lead. After the Beavers scored in the the third, the Dolphins would once again respond in the fifth. First it was Saranczak, who singled up the middle to plate Bartziokas. He was followed up by Blake, who hit yet another RBI double, bringing the score to 5-2 in favor of CMSV. From there, however, it was all Beavers, who scored three runs in the sixth to tie things up and eventually won the game in the bottom of the ninth due to an error. Tyler Reyes started the game and paced all pitchers with five strikeouts.

Despite the losses, it won't affect the standings, as the Dolphins will be taking on Old Westbury on Wednesday in the first round of the Skyline Conference postseason. But before that, they'll have one more tuneup game, this time against Western Connecticut State. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Monday evening.
