Newburgh, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's baseball team returned to Skyline Conference action on Sunday when they traveled upstate to take on the Mount Saint Mary Knights. Both teams took once victory from one another, which improved the Dolphins' overall record to 14-15 with a conference mark of 9-7. Nine Skyline wins is the highest total since the 2011 season, a great feat in its own right.
Game one of the afternoon saw the Dolphins fall to the Knights by the score of 6-2. After a first inning run by Mount Saint Mary, the game became a pitchers' duel on both ends. Despite picking up the loss, junior
Amir Nitowski had another strong game on the bump, as he went seven innings while allowing just three earned runs. The bats finally came alive in the eighth inning, as both
Nick Saranczak and
Zachary Saunders each picked up an RBI. Unfortunately, however, it was too little, too late as the Knights already had a lead they'd never look back on. Freshman
Michael Grisanti led the way with three total hits while
Anthony Nocero and
Matt DiNorcia picked up two apiece.
The second contest, however, was a different story, as CMSV's bats were working early and often. After
Isidoros Bartziokas and Nocero reached base in the first inning, Grisanti drove both of them in with a two run double, giving his team an early two run edge. Saunders tacked on another run in the second inning with a double to left field, which put the game away for good. Innings four through six were as good as it gets, as head coach
John Muller saw contriubtions from all over his lineup. In the fourth,
Jake Blinstrub tripled in a run, which was followed up by a pair of doubles by Bartziokas and Nocero that drove in another pair of Dolphins. Freshman
Eric Zimmermann connected on his first collegiate home run in the sixth, which gave CMSV an 8-1 lead. The icing on the cake came in the sixth when Grisanti and DiNorcia hit back to back home runs, capping off a strong afternoon of play. The game wouldn't have been what it was without another fantastic outing from freshman Pete Sanderson. The first year hurler went all seven innings, allowing just one run and five hits while striking out seven. The victory lowered Sanderson's season ERA to 2.14.
The Dolphins have now completed conference play and are in a strong position to reach the postseason for the first time since 2014. They'll have a chance to improve on their overall record starting Tuesday when they travel to CSI in a Battle of the Dolphins.
