Newburgh, NY - The softball team traveled to Newburgh on this beautiful Sunday afternoon to take on the conferences reigning champions Mount Saint Mary. CMSV was winners of four straight conference games headed into todays doubleheader and they were looking to keep the streak in tact. The Dolphins were unable to take the first game as they fell 5-3. But they started another winning streak defeating the knights 7-4 in game number two. This was the Dolphins first victory over the knights since 2015.
The first game of the afternoon started with strong pitching from both sides. The Dolphins and Knights did not see a run come across the plate in the first two innings. The Knights would strike first as they scored five runs total in the 3rd, 4th and 5th inning. Now with the Dolphins trailing 5-0 they needed to battle back. That is just what they did as Katie Moos ripped a double to center field which brought in two runs, Taylor Milata would follow this up with a single that would drive in Moos. CMSV would cut the lead to 5-3 but this would be as close as they would get as both defenses locked it down and 5-3 would be the game one final.
Game number two had a near identical start as the first three innings both teams were held scoreless. The Knights would strike first yet again with three runs in the fourth inning. These three runs seemed to spark the Dolphins as they came out in the bottom of the fourth on fire. The inning started with the bases loaded and Abigail Laurendeau singled to drive in Taylor Wittick to start the huge inning. Now it was Erin Patterson's turn with bases loaded, she would continue the rally with a single that scored Hanna Thompson. Sophia Herrera would be up next and she earned a walk that would advance Deanna Nardi home. Now with three runs across the plate the Dolphins were just getting started, Milata would come up and drive in two runs with a single to right field. Alanna Alioto-Reyes would follow up Milata's two RBI's with two of her own to push the Dolphins lead to 7-3. The Dolphins would lock in on defense and only allow the Knights to score one more run and lock up the 7-4 victory.
The Dolphins are right back in tomorrow as they take on Sarah Lawerence College at Mercy College for their senior day. After todays split the Dolphins are 10-17 overall and have a 7-3 Skyline Conference Record.
